iPad, Phone or Desktop: Where Should You Reframe Vertical Video?

Touch is fast, a big screen is precise and a timeline is powerful. A practical comparison to help you choose where to reframe each project.

Quick answer: reframe on a phone for speed right after shooting, on an iPad or Android tablet for the best balance of touch control and screen size, and on desktop in Premiere Pro or DaVinci Resolve when the vertical version is part of a larger professional edit.

Cropper runs in all three places. Each has strengths.

Phone

Best for: quick clips, posting from location, creators who shoot on their phone.

Strengths: footage is already there, touch control is direct, export goes straight to social apps.

Limits: small screen, harder to see the full wide image and the vertical window at once.

Tablet

Best for: sport, events and anything with fast motion.

Strengths: a large touch canvas shows the whole 16:9 source with room to anticipate movement. Guiding the frame with a finger is fast and precise.

Limits: not where most professional timelines live.

Desktop

Best for: client work, multi-version deliveries, projects that also need grading, audio and graphics.

Strengths: the reframe sits inside your Premiere Pro or DaVinci Resolve project, alongside everything else.

Limits: mouse and keyboard are less direct than touch for following action.

A mixed workflow

Many editors combine them: rough social clips on a tablet the same day, final deliverables on desktop. Because the idea is the same everywhere, guiding the frame by hand, switching is easy.

Same idea, every screen
