Square, Vertical or 4:5? Choosing the Right Aspect Ratio for Each Platform

9:16, 4:5 and 1:1 each have a job. A clear guide to which aspect ratio to deliver, and how to reframe once for several of them.

Vertical video is not one format. Depending on where a clip will live, the best shape might be a full-screen 9:16, a slightly shorter 4:5, or a classic 1:1 square. Choosing correctly makes the difference between a clip that fills the screen and one that sits in a box with bars around it.

9:16: full-screen vertical

This is the native shape of short-form video. TikTok, Instagram Reels and Stories, and YouTube Shorts are all designed around a frame that fills an upright phone. A standard delivery size is 1080×1920 pixels.

Use 9:16 when the clip is meant to be watched full screen, one video at a time.

4:5: the feed format

In scrolling feeds, where a post shares the screen with captions and other posts, a 4:5 frame (for example 1080×1350) takes up a lot of vertical space without demanding the whole screen. It is a common choice for video posts that appear in a feed rather than a full-screen player.

1:1: the safe square

Square video works almost everywhere and looks consistent across platforms. It is less immersive than vertical, but it is a sensible default when one file has to serve many places, including some messaging apps and older layouts.

Reframe once, deliver several

A useful trick is to reframe for the narrowest format first. A good 9:16 composition, with the subject comfortably inside the frame, can usually be widened to 4:5 or 1:1 with little extra work. Going the other way, from square to vertical, often reveals that the subject no longer fits.

Keep the subject near the center of the vertical frame so wider versions do not need to move.

Keep text inside the area common to all formats so it survives every export.

Cropper supports vertical and square framing, so you can guide the composition once and prepare the versions your channels need.
