How to Reframe Football Highlights for Reels, Shorts and TikTok

Wide match footage is the hardest material to turn vertical. A practical method for following the ball, the player and the moment.

Football is shot to show space: the shape of the teams, the run behind the defence, the pass that opens the game. A vertical frame removes most of that space. Turning match footage into a good 9:16 highlight means deciding, moment by moment, which part of the pitch tells the story.

Start by choosing the clip, not the crop

Not every highlight survives the move to vertical. A long diagonal pass across the whole pitch is hard to follow in a narrow frame. A dribble, a shot, a save or a celebration is ideal. Pick moments where the action stays in one area for at least a second or two.

A simple three-part method

1. Build-up: follow the ball. In the seconds before the key moment, keep the ball in the frame with a little space ahead of it. Lead the play rather than chasing it.

2. The moment: follow the player. As the shot or tackle happens, shift attention to the player making it. Viewers want to see the body shape, the strike, the reaction.

3. Aftermath: hold. After the goal or save, stop moving. Let the celebration or the goalkeeper's reaction play in a steady frame. A still camera here feels confident and gives the viewer time to enjoy it.

Avoid these common mistakes

Tracking every touch. If the frame moves with every small change of direction, the clip becomes tiring to watch. Smooth, purposeful moves read as professional.

Losing the goal. When the shot is struck, it helps to show where it is going. A quick, decisive move toward the goal can be more powerful than staying on the shooter.

Ignoring the scoreboard and graphics. Broadcast graphics in the corners of the wide frame will be cut off. If the score matters, add it back as a clean overlay in the vertical edit.

Doing it quickly

Sports content lives on speed. In Cropper you play the clip and guide the frame with your finger, so a ten-second highlight can be reframed in roughly the time it takes to watch it, with keyframes you can adjust afterward.

The best vertical highlights feel like they were shot for the phone. That comes from a few clear decisions about where to look.
